The Asus Eee PC 1000

Pros – great basic spec with loads of upgrade options, versatile screen, simple to use, good battery life, good camera

Cons – heavy, bulky, top end of the netbook price range

Summary
Another winner from the Asus Eee corner is the Asus Eee PC 1000 and it’s a great all-rounder. It takes the best of the 901 and moves it on. It has the great looks we have come to love in the Eee range. Add to that its got a good basic spec with loads of great upgrade options and as soon as you open it up and start tickling those keys you realise the Asus Eee PC 1000 is a comfortable to use as that favourite pair of slippers your granny bought you.

First Glance
Well, it’s a Eee machine – classic lines and comfortable feel. The base model comes in pearl white and fine ebony. Take any one of the upgraded units and the colour range is extensive, stretching as far as sakura and sweet pea! Straighaway you can feel the quality. The 10.2 inch screen has a pretty good 1024 x 600 resolution with a great non-glossy finish which is dead easy to from all angles. With a big screen comes a big keyboard and this one is hard to beat – big, positive keys with a decent gap between them – great for even chunky fingers. The mousepad is top notch and very sensitive to different strokes - great for web-surfing.
In fact where can we find fault? – well, perhaps the weight – at a mimimum of 1.3kg the Asus Eee PC 1000 is less of a netbook and more of an ultra-portable laptop

The Essentials
Great to see our old friend the Atom N270 under the bonnet – with this ubiquitous processor you can’t really go wrong. With 1Gb ram and a basic storage of 40Gb flash memory (plus the Eee complementary on-line 60Gb storage) the Asus Eee PC 1000 is well equipped to deal with most tasks. Ok 3D gaming might not be perfect but if that’s your big thing you’re looking at the wrong site!! The 6 cell 6600 mAh battery’s pretty good too with a minimum of 4 hours even on high drain applications. (we hear that the latest upgrade option – the Asus Eee PC 1000HE – will feature an unbelievable 9 hour battery life!!!!!). Linux is the standard but XP is of course an option

What more do you need to know?
There’s a great 1.3 megapixel on-board webcam and 3 USB ports.Add to that the built in bluetooth and Asus haven’t scrimped on the basics……………except perhaps the frustrating lack of 3G compatibility.

Options
- There are no less than 5 variants of the basic Asus Eee PC 1000 model. Depending on what you are looking for you can cover all the basics…..

- Windows or Linux
- SSD or HDD
- Vast array of colours
- Increased ram
