The Asus Eee PC 901

Pros - low cost, Linux or Windows, bluetooth, huge battery life

Cons - heavy, cramped keyboard, small storage capacity (SSD)

The Asus Eee range set the benchmark for netbooks in many ways. It is small, stylish and flexible. The 901 is a step up from the 900 model, the biggest difference being the inclusion of the Atom processor which is now commonplace in most machines.

The 901 is bang up to date featuring solid state memory rather than a conventional hard drive to keep the weight down. OK so at 12 or 20gb it may not set the world on fire but for most applications it should be enough and if you do need more storage check out ‘cloud technology’ – store your programmes and large files on the web and access them from anywhere. The upside of the inclusion of the SSD of course is the fantastic battery life – it’s a 6600mAH model and lasts a whopping 5 hours under normal usage!
The 1gb Ram is pretty much standard fair. The 901 also comes with a 8.9 inch screen which is again fairly mainstream although the Asus has always had a bright, screen with rich colour.
Hard to find too many negatives. Some may find the casing a little plastic and chunky-fingered adults may struggle with the rather cramped keyboard but other than that it’s a good buy.

In summary the 901 is a good all rounder and represents good value for money.

Choose your 901 carefully – it is available in black or white, with Linux or Windows loaded as standard and with SSD memory from 12 to 20 gb. If you are unsure which way to go see our buyers guide.
