Asus Eee PC S101

Pros – drop dead gorgeous, great build quality, very thin and light, cheap…….if it had the spec of a laptop!

Cons – single core processor, standard fare interior, small storage capacity, expensive ….against its netbook brothers!

Summary
Sumptuous, super, stylish stunner……….if you’ve got cash to splash! The Asus Eee PC S101 is the latest offering from the Eee family and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s quite simply gorgeous to behold and to use. In fact there’s only one major flaw – the price. At close on £400 this baby is right up there in the laptop bracket yet has the spec of a fairly standard netbook. So pay your money and take your pick – if you love styling to match even the legendary Macbook Air then this will do the job at less than half the price. If, however, you’re expecting to edit your latest HD blockbuster footage on it then forget it!

First Glance
Phew – what can we say? This is computing love at first sight! The chassis is metallic not plasticky like previous models. It is sturdy and won’t flex. . The attention to detail is commendable – check out the brushed metal wrist wrest and those glitter covered keys!. The 10.2 inch screen is bright and clear (although at 1024 x 600 the resolution could be better). The main buttons on the keyboard are full size and your fingers seem to glide untroubled across the expanse of keys. The multitouch mousepad is a real step up from previous versions and from other leading netbooks such as the MSI Wind– easy to use and very positive as are the buttons. Pick it up and it’ll fly out of your mitts if you’re not careful – at just 1.1kg and wafer thin it needs treating like a new-born! Mind you – pick it up and you won’t actually want to put it back down again……ever!
Yup – the Asus Eec PC S101 is Class with a capital K!
And now for the colours – brown, graphite, champagne and …….pink! Oh Matron……..!

The Essentials
The processor is an N270 – pretty standard – Ok until you consider the price – should it be a dual core? The 1Gb Ram is ok for most applications but again doesn’t set the world alight. Watch out when choosing the storage. Flash SSD memory from 16-64Gb is standard on the 101 – if that’s enough for you then great because the SSD as we know is bomb proof and whisper quiet. That would be our choice but if you need more memory check out the 101H with 160Gb HDD.
The battery is pretty good – again SSD pulls less juice so go for this if you can. Either way you are looking at 4-5 hours comfortably for the 4200 or 4900 mAh on board unit.
As usual with Eee machines you can go down the Linux or Windows route. If you want to keep the cost down check out the Linux – the more we see it in fact the more we like it

What more do you need to know?
Nothing stunning to report in this section I’m afraid. Yes, the card reader’s great and bluetooth is a given at this price-point but we were disappointed with the 0.3 megapixel camera and the lack of 3G support. Speakers are just average although voice quality when Skyping seemed pretty good.

Options
- Windows or Linux
